Is it possible to create a translucent PNG?

Hi Kayaker,
I am not exactly sure what you mean. When in Open GL you can use the number 5 command "translucent objects" and then save the picture as a png file.
I think, it's not possible. The png file has no alpha-channel.
You can make it translucent with PhotoShop or PaintShopPro.
I didn't try it out with png, but with gif files. Gif has 256 colors, and you can define one of them as transparent (in most cases I use the white background). It's nice to play with these overlay pictures... ![]()
Hi Der_Planer,
I have PhotoShop but I'm afraid trying to tweak the .PNG into being translucent may take more time than I have.

Why do you need a translucent png picture?
Hi Der_Planer,
It can be helpful in conveying design ideas especially when working with engineers on joinery details allowing them to see through the connection zone. Especially with engineers not having a solid back ground in timber engineering. By the way! Jason's advice works, command 5 while in open GL! I can't believe I missed command 5. Oh well. When I have time I might try your PhotoShop approach.

Hi Kayaker,
there are different ways, what you can do with pictures:
1: solid-colored (opaque)
2: translucent picture (but not translucent construction with visible background lines)
3: solid with transparent background
4: translucent picture with transparent background
That's what I said with PhotoShop. What you need (and already got) is a
5: solid picture with translucent construction.
Kayaker,
You can also change the texture set found in object info for select pieces to transparent. This also helps to show joinery more clearly when some pieces are transparent and some solid.
Hi Jason and Der_Planer,
Thanks for sharing your image files which are very helpful and inspiring.
Thanks!

Jason's tip is in fact quite interesting - to select what elements to be solid and what to be tranclucent.
When I "take pictures" I normally take a screen shot from OpenGl, where I can choose tranclucent or solid view, and paste it into Photoshop, where I can save it with whatever filename, filetype, and location I want.
The option to make such a "save as" operation directly from OpenGL is still not possible?? Or will it be in version 8?
You can save pictures from the normal OpenGL view (not from OpenGL workspace) with rightclick and store, or use <H> or <J> key.
Yes I know - but probably not with "save as" option. With this I mean to save the picture in whatever location you want and with whatever meaningfull filename you want??
