OpenGL black screen.

  • Hello.

On my desktop computer I get a problem with OpenGl. It is probably when the project reach a certain size. But I need to be able to do these big projects. When I open openGL in wall design or D-Cam I get a black screen.

    A little about my computer:
    Windows XP Pro sp2
    Pentium 4, 3,2 GHz
    2 GB Ram
    Graphic card is Radeon 9550

So what could improve my work on this computer? Is it a new graphic card? More ram?

If you start OpenGL in other moduls it is working?
In wall design and DICAM you can start OpenGL with smaller projects?
How many RAM does have the Graphic card?

  • Hi Thorvald,

you use an ATI graphic card. If your operating system is Windows Vista, we do cannot recommend ATI products at the moment as they do not have proper suport for OpenGL under Vista yet. In this case you have three possibilities:
    1. Wait for proper driver Updates from ATI
    2. Downgrade your OS to WinXP
    3. Use a NVIDIA graphic card (at least 7000/ 8000/ quadro series)

    Best regards,

  • If you start OpenGL in other moduls it is working?
    - No.
In wall design and DICAM you can start OpenGL with smaller projects?
    - Yes.
How many RAM does have the Graphic card?
    - 256MB of DDR memory
And as I wrote I use Windows XP Pro.

On my laptop, I can start OpenGL with the same project, but this is also an NVidia GeForse Go 7600 grapfic card, and Windows Vista.

In this case it seems to be a problem with your Graphic card. The Ram of your computer is big enough.
You can try another Graphic card and in this case it should be a NVIDIA but no ATI.

  • The next question would be - exactly what graphic card I should go for?? One example could be NVidia Geforce 9800GX2. Should I go for more ram - t.ex. min. 512 MB?

Sincerely Yours. M. Sc. E. Thorvald, Denmark
    (Dietrichs version 7.03).

  • Yeahh - but it is also a bit expensive, but on the other hand I am going to work with even bigger projects, so maybe I should just go for it - so I can enjoy the work.

  • You are right Der_planer - I didn't know that, but now I do. I have been suggested these two cards:

Sapphire RADEON X1950 PRO and XFX GeForce 7950 GT, bot with 512 MB ram and both for AGP.

  • I am considering a new computer. I am interested in Acer Aspire Prestige series, t.ex. this one:

    Acer Aspire M5100
AMD PHENOM 9500 Quad core (2,2 GHz)
    4 GB DDR2 ram 667 MHz (4x1024 MB)
    960 GB SATA Harddisk 7200 rpm.(3x320 GB)
    GeForce 8600 GS 512/1278 MB
    DVI, VGA. HDTV
    LAN 10/100/100 WLAN 802.11 b/g

    Windows Vista Home Premium

Does Dietrichs take the benefits of a quadcore processor??

  • Hi Thorvald,

very few programs split up their calculations to different tasks, and Dietrich's does not, either. So we do not benefit from dual core or quad core technology. The only advantage is that you can go on working in another program without problems while Dietrichs is calculating a complex operation. I think the only reason for computer manufacturers to introduce the multi-core technology is that the CPU-speed has been pushed to the limits and they need new marketing arguments.
My recommendation: If you can switch 4 processors with lower speed against two or one processors with higher speed each, you should do that.

    Best regards,

    Jens

  • So basically most programs uses only one of the cores in dual core, quad core processors?? And does that mean that with a 2,2 GHz quadcore the programs only take benefit from 0,55 GHz, and this is much lower than a 3GHz single core processor??

Sincerely Yours. M. Sc. E. Thorvald, Denmark
    (Dietrichs version 7.03).

  • No, in a 2.2GHz Quadcore, each processor has 2.2 GHz. But if only one processor runs for the current task, this is still a little bit slower than the 3GHz single core.

  • Ok, I understand that now. Will future updates of Dietrichs take the benefit to use more than one core in multicore processors??

  • Our software is compatible with multi-core processors. We continually adapt our software to the latest computer technologies and we have already made the necessary steps to divide our processes to several CPUs. But you have to know that this technology has its limits as most of the calculation depend on the results of the earlier calculations. So it is physically impossible to get double performance from two processors or four times the performance from four processors.

    Best regards,
    Jens

  • Zitat von Jens Krause

First you said above - and now you say this:

I am not sure about what you mean. I know that Dietrichs can run on a core 2 duo t.ex. But first you say that Dietrichs can't benefit from multicore processors and now you say it does?? Or maybe you say it is comming soon??

  • Hi - the first quote is from this post: Posted: 21am30UTC(21.04.2008 07:38.

So the thruth is that Dietrichs can benefit from multicore processors, and that Dietrichs is running on more than one core, if there are more than one available!!??
