Metal Shape List

  • This week I received help dimensioning a steel plate used for connecting members of a truss. My question, what is the best designation to use so I get a quantity and part numbers in my list? I usually extrude the metal shape and use assisting geometry in wall design and extrude it in D-Cam. I like to give the metal shape a mark like MK-1 as I create the shape the next shape would be MK-2 etc. I would like to see how many MK-1 and MK-2 I need to order. One more thing, I often forget which mark / part number was last used because I get distracted during the day. Is there a way in Dietrich’s that one can see the last part number / mark given to a member in a list or report even though the list is not yet complete for ordering?

It's not so easy, as you cannot define your own sorting numbers. When you use 1-8-1 in Dicam, the progam creates part numbers by scanning the building.
What you can do, is giving different names to each part. The best would be, to give the correct name, while creating the part, but it's also possible to rename them later (volume info).
While scanning the model, Dicam will check, if it finds eqal parts, they will get the same number. But: Dicam will find more differences as you can see. Different names, processes, material, dimensions or MOS are sorted with different numbers. Maybe you have to compress the resulting list manually.

If you forgot the last used name, you find an alphabetical sorted list of names with Dicam 9-7 (filter). The filter only shows the visible (not hidden) parts.

Caution: If you want a list of parts, you have to choose, what kind of part you create. Beams, panels, profiled beams, formed parts or assisting parts are treated differently when making lists or drawings.
With the item number you also define a lot of properties, you find them in the material database.

When you give names to the parts, they should not begin with numbers (such as '111/rafter'), because these system numbers are also used for different functions.

In my last 'metal shape building' I didn't use names or lists. I only made a dxf drawing for CNC, and manually wrote the number of pieces to the plan.
