using "distance in ground G" directly in 5-3-2

  • Hello all,

when using 5-3-2 (define roof) in the roof design module "distance in ground G" is grayed-out. The only way to specify location of a plate is by giving the top-of-the-plate height.

I know it can be accessed if I were using a roof profile, but I don't really need to set one up for this project.

I have come across several situations already where it would have been far more efficient for me to use Distance in ground.

please, could anyone tell me how to access this input directly?

    cheers,

  • i just tried to use the function with a ground distance of 0 from the wall reference axis and it just won't let me. so, unless there is something i am missing again i have to enter something like 0.00000001 to make it work

i am starting to warm up to the software but this is another example of its quirkiness (which by the way is not a derogatory term)

    cheers,

    Hi jorge,

our quirky software should work with your last input. A value of '0' should work correctly and you should not need to enter something like 0.00000001.
I actualy cheched this and I had no problems. I even tried your quirky unit (ft-in) and it worked with '0'.
Perhaps we can fix the problem if you give us your position.

  • Hi Joachim,

I believe you may replicate the issue. i tried it in a new position, and with several different plate definitions.

to get to what the function 5-3-2 looked like when i started ("distance in ground G" grayed out with no value)

    1) 5-3-2
    2) delete any value you may have in "distance in ground G"
    3) click on any other property such as obholz. this will gray out "distance in ground G" and activate height of "plate's top edge O"
    4) enter an appropriate height for "plate's top edge O"

Now as per Planer's instructions (thank you again):

    1) delete the value in "plate's top edge O"
    2) click on any other property such as obholz. this will gray out "plate's top edge O" and activate "distance in ground G".
    3) enter 0
    4) click on any other property you still have to change, or click on "all roof sides", "full lenght", etc to exit the function and create the plate

you'll see that "distance in ground G" is grayed out again with no value, and "plate's top edge O" becomes active again.

I don't believe i made an issue at all of this, but there you have it. i will leave it up to you to try it with decimal units if you so feel inclined

    cheers,

I think my english is too bad so I did not understand everything you told us. I do not know what you mean with "fealing inclined" and I do not know if I did understand everything you explained with the plates.

If I enter any plate and later on I again open the dialogbox for the plates I get the last values I entered in this dialogbox. If I entered the plate with 'distance in Ground' and 'obholz' the dialogbox will keep this situation until I change it myselfe.
All dialogboxes save the last used situation so the dialogbox for the plates does it too.
If your program does not save the last situation perhaps your folder 'WINVOR\ENG' has a problem. Perhaps you do not have the rights to save files in this folder.

  • Hi,

I think your English is excellent. It is not my native language either so I know it can be problematic sometimes.

Joachim, i am sorry I don't know how to explain this little kink more clearly, i just tried this on the three computers we have dietrich's installed on and it does happen.

I do understand that the last situation is saved for when you open the dialogue box again, and yes, all our computers save the last situation as well. Once you use 0.0...1 the next time you open the dialog box it rounds it off to 0, so from there on there is no problem, until you change that 0 to something else, and then later on you try to use 0 again.

If you follow the steps (or have someone else help you) as outlined in my last message i am positive you will be able to replicate the "issue".

Now I again checked your steps above and I found that this just occurs with unit feet-inch. I do not know why I did not see this with my first test.
This is an error which must be fixed.

  • Hi Joachim,

I don't care much for the "foot" part of the imperial system either, but I do like having fractional inches, so instead of using 6'-3.1875 i use 75 3/16.

would it be possible to see this format in Dietrichs? perhaps if it were included in the future it may give less trouble than the foot-inch format?

    cheers,
