Shorten beam going into Compound Housing

Hello,

I have made a compound housing of 2 1/4". I would now like to shorten the male piece, but leave the housing the same depth.

I have done this by going into the single beam info of the male piece, exploding the process, and changing the value of the cut off.

Is there a better way?

For some reason this works on my jack rafters but not with rafters perpendicular to a plate.

I will explode the process and use 3-4-1 to cut them shorter.
